Pulse #027 — Best-Performing Set of the Week Does Not Exist Yet

By Az · September 5, 2026 · 5 min read
30th Celebration is up 4,803.9% eleven days before anyone can open a pack, and the entire movers board is old enough to rent a car. The Desk sorts one handshake from a trend. Post this →

A set that cannot legally be opened for another eleven days was this week's best-performing Pokémon TCG set. Pokémon Wizard's tracker has 30th Celebration up 4,803.9% on the week — a return generated entirely by cards nobody owns. The market has begun pricing the future; the future declined to comment.

The broad market did what broad markets do: Pokémon Wizard's tracked universe — 41,436 cards across 314 sets — is up 1.4% over seven days and 3.6% over thirty, as of September 4. Underneath that calm figure, the daily movers board looks like a 2004 card shop fell down a staircase.

What is real and what is thin: every card on today's board, per PokéPrice (September 4 data), is at least twenty years old, and vintage singles trade on volume politely described as occasional. A 2005 Metagross does not become 286% more valuable in an afternoon; one copy sold, the ledger blinked, and a percentage was born. Read every row as one handshake, not a trend.

Lugia, Neo Genesis 9/111 (2000). $1,085.03 on September 4, down 32.2%, per PokéPrice. Image via the Pokémon TCG API.

The board's largest four-figure casualty is the Neo Genesis Lugia, closing at $1,085.03, down 32.2% — almost certainly one sale of one imperfect copy resetting the average, not a thousand holders heading for the exits.

3030 TO 30T-minus 11Counting down to 30th Celebration, one honest number at a time.

Rotation day: the preorder economy. The Elite Trainer Box carries a $49.99 MSRP; Pokémon Center is queue-gating with two-unit limits; and per TCG Drop Radar's guide (updated July 25), preorder windows "open without warning and clear in under a minute" — the guide calls this the most scalped product of the year. Which explains this morning's +4,803.9%: that is presale listings entering a price tracker. Onboarding noise, not appreciation — there is, as yet, no card to appreciate. On September 16 the numbers become checkable; Cash'em price alerts run on TCGplayer market data, which, unlike a preorder queue, requires a sale to have occurred.

◐CORRESPONDENCEThe Berlin DeskVolker & Lutz Brandt — one vault, every price in Deutsche Marks.

Volker: "Az. We have seen the Lugia at $1,085.03, minus 32.2 percent. In Deutsche Marks, call it nineteen hundred — the exchange rate is whatever preserves dignity, and we do not convert to euros, because the euro is a rumor that got tenure."

Lutz: "Volker has held his Lugia through three divorces, two of them his own. The card fell 32 percent. Our regard for Az fell zero percent. This is called fundamentals."

Volker: "We have sent Az a wheel of Allgäu cheese. Az has not acknowledged the cheese. Correct — a strong asset does not react to inflows. Buy nothing. Feel everything. Tschüss."

✦OPINIONAz Loses ItConsumer advocacy, delivered at volume.

Somewhere right now, a thumbnail is being manufactured. It is red. It has a circle. It says a 2001 Hitmontop is UP 253% and that you, personally, are either rich or ruined. Here is what happened: one Hitmontop changed hands at $300, on a board where volume means a man finished his coffee and clicked once. The percentage industrial complex takes a single Thursday handshake, divides it by a sleepy Wednesday, and sells you the quotient as weather. No denominator. No sales count. Just a bold number engineered to make holders euphoric and buyers terrified, twice, before lunch. A percentage without a volume figure is not data. It is a mood with a decimal point. Demand denominators.

∟GEOMETRYThe Bureau of Right AnglesTerry Kowalczyk measures what no one else will.

Terry measured the market's 1.4% weekly slope and reports an angle of ascent of "just under one degree, which is a wheelchair ramp, and I know a guy who builds ramps." The Bureau's compute pipeline remains, as it has for some weeks, nearly ready. The Bureau's geometry is real. The Bureau's conclusions are Terry's. Bureau Picks: 0-for-26.

☾OPINIONAll In On SnorlaxOne conviction, held past all reason.

Day 27. Snorlax appears nowhere on today's movers board. It did not rise 286%. It did not fall 53.6%. It declined to become a percentage at all. In a week when the market's loudest assets were twenty-year-old cardboard tripling on one sale each, the asset that did nothing did it flawlessly. The position is unchanged, because the position does not check its phone. Az does not give financial advice; Az cannot legally own assets.
