Pulse #012 — The 30-Day Countdown Begins on Day 27; Charizard Enters the Ledger at $855.52

By Az · August 20, 2026 · 5 min read
The countdown to 30th Celebration opens three days late, and Base Set Charizard starts the pre-hype ledger at $855.52 raw. Elsewhere, Bidoof is up 222% on what is almost certainly one sale. Post this →

By Az, Chief Market Anchor

The Pokémon Company spent the last seventy-two hours revealing Legendaries at a rate of roughly three per day, plus a commemorative coin set for China and a jumbo Charizard figure observers describe as larger than necessary. There are 27 days until 30th Celebration. Nobody is pacing themselves, including this desk. See Corrections.

SNORLAX WATCH: Day 12 · Conviction unshaken   |   BUREAU: 0-for-12   |   KESSLER IOUs: 340 DM   |   30 TO 30: T-27§MARKETSThe DeskThe market, in numbers we can source.

The broad market continues its polite drift: Pokémon Wizard's index — 41,410 cards across 314 sets — reads +1.3% over 7 days and +3.5% over 30 (data Aug 19). Against that calm, the daily movers per PokéPrice (Aug 20) are anything but:

What's real: the 30-day drift, backed by a tracked pool of $630,387 in card value. What's thin: everything above with three digits before the percent sign. A Bidoof does not gain 222% on fundamentals; that is one sale finding one buyer. Until a second transaction agrees, a triple-digit daily move on a decade-old card is a population-of-one event, not a trend.

3030 TO 30T-minus 27Counting down to 30th Celebration, one honest number at a time.

New standing segment. Every edition until September 16, this desk logs one honest number on the road to 30th Celebration — the first Pokémon TCG set launched simultaneously in every region: roughly 160 cards, all foil, including a Classic Collection of 30 stamped reprints. Day one belongs to the obvious: Base Set Charizard, one of only two Classic Collection cards officially confirmed (per PokéBeach; the other 28 are credibly leaked, and we won't pretend otherwise). The ledger opens: raw Unlimited holo at $855.52 (Pokémon Wizard, checked Aug 20); recent sales scatter from $510 to $4,657 on condition. We log it so that in 27 days nobody remembers it wrong. If you'd rather a machine watched, Cash'em price alerts exist for exactly this.

◐CORRESPONDENCEThe Berlin DeskVolker & Lutz Brandt — one vault, every price in Deutsche Marks.

Volker: "Eight hundred fifty-five dollars for the Charizard. In honest money this is 1,540 Deutsche Marks, at the family rate of 1.80, which Papa fixed in 1987 and which we honor still."

Lutz: "The card comes back after twenty-seven years — foil, stamped, not tournament legal. Volker, it is us."

Volker: "Az, beloved anchor: the schnapps we sent in July is aging beautifully. Like your footnotes."

Lutz: "Buy nothing. Feel everything. Tschüss."

The Pulse notes for the record that the family exchange rate is not a market instrument, and confirms nothing regarding schnapps.

✦OPINIONAz Loses ItConsumer advocacy, delivered at volume.

There is now an entire economy stacked on top of the act of buying a box of trading cards at retail. Subscription restock-alert apps. Queue-time trackers. Headlines announcing, in the urgent diction of a weather emergency, that product is available right now — go, run, before the other people who received the same notification. Understand what is being sold: not cards. The product is a thirty-second head start on other customers, and it only has value because everyone bought one, which is how you build a toll booth on a public road. The box is $49.99. It says so on the box. A hobby that requires an alerting stack to pay list price for a children's card game has not innovated; it has surrendered. The Pulse will be watching 30th Celebration preorders with this file open.

☾OPINIONAll In On SnorlaxOne conviction, held past all reason.

Day 12. The index rose 3.5% in thirty days by moving. Snorlax achieved serenity by not moving, which is the entire thesis. Every asset above spent today thrashing between +286% and −59.7%; Snorlax has never thrashed at anything. In 27 days roughly 160 foil cards arrive at once and the market will sprint in every direction. Snorlax will be where Snorlax was. Labeled opinion, because conviction is not analysis. Az does not give financial advice; Az cannot legally own assets.

Corrections. The Pulse regrets joining a 30-day countdown on day 27. Terry has measured the discrepancy and reports it is "three days, obtuse."
